I’ve got to say, more than as a sci-fi thriller, I watch Sunny, for the fashion and architecture, because wow, is the Japanese setting so chromatically stimulating! Sunny follows Suzie, an American woman who’s been living in Japan for a decade. Suzie is married to Masa, a simple Japanese man who apparently works in refrigeration, and they have a kid together named Zen. Unfortunately, one day Zen and Masa go missing after their flight ends up crashing. This crash leads to Suzie discovering many dark family secrets about Masa, but moreover, it almost seems like Suzie knows nothing about the man she’s been married to for the last 10 years. Now, this all seems quite ordinary, but the big twist is that Masa may be involved with the Yakuza. Or rather, he may be the son of a Yakuza member (whoop). In episode 6, Mixxy finds Sunny at the temple and brings her back to Suzie, only for them to realize that she’s been completely dismantled. Episode 7 reveals some more information about Sunny’s disposition (I know she’s not human, but it’s fun!) and Hime’s situation, but we still have no information about Zen or what happened to Masa.
Spoiler Alert
What Happened To That Politician From The First Episode?
Episode 7 begins with a flashback of what went down in the house of that politician who died a few days before Masa’s disappearance. According to the news, the man was pushed down the stairs by his homebot and died instantly. Now, most of this information is right, except Hime was the one who shoved the guy by holding the homebot’s arms and delivering the blow. Later, she erased its memory and then rebooted it, making it seem like a glitch. It seems there’s animosity for the politician because he was against the Yakuza and wanted to get rid of them (not sure how that would’ve worked). I’m not sure why Hime would take such a drastic step, especially when the man was so vocal about his distaste for the Yakuza.
Why Do Suzie and Mixxy Fight?
In the meantime, back at the Sakamoto household, Suzie and Mixxy wake up in bed together. No, it’s not what it sounds like; they were probably exhausted putting Sunny back together, but as soon as Suzie’s up, she tries to wake Sunny up. Sunny doesn’t wake up though. Mixxy tells Suzie she has to leave for work though, because she bailed early the previous day. A little bit calmer than before, Suzie apologizes to Mixxy for being a prick and having expectations from her to help Suzie. What is she getting out of this situation, though? Suzie then forces Mixxy to wear one of her own outfits but becomes a little bit irritable when Mixxy thinks it’s too fancy for her. No, I would kill to wear that, so I get why Suzie’s mad, but this mini-argument gets Mixxy delayed by 5 minutes. Before leaving, Mixxy tells Suzie that they’ll figure out what’s happened to Sunny later in the day together, but the second Mixxy leaves, Suzie wakes Sunny up, and it works. But Sunny’s different. She’s more irritable than Suzie down two “cups” of neat whiskey. Sunny seems to despise her owner now, unbothered by Suzie’s needs and deciding to do her own thing. There’s a fun PMS joke that Sunny doesn’t take well. This leaves Suzie to fend for herself, and she decides her meal will be whiskey and some chips.
Back in prison, Noriko is having a great time playing her games with her fellow prisonmates. She decides to give Suzie a call and notices what she’s eating. I think these are the same chips she told her not to eat after they saw the Yakuza pass them out during the meeting of the families of the people on the flight. Noriko is only checking up on Suzie though, and it still isn’t time for her to come back to the “real world,” so to speak. However, what’s more shocking is that Sunny is excited to talk to Noriko.
Seeing how she’s basically friendless, Suzie decides to leave a message for an old friend named Dee. In this message, Suzie says she has no friends, and she’s sorry about whatever she did to Dee, though we don’t learn of it in this episode. Mixxy overhears Suzie narrating this message. Mixxy’s back because she got fired for being tardy after leaving without a word the previous day, all for Suzie, but Suzie gives her a half-hearted apology, which gets Mixxy mad, and they have a massive argument. Suzie tells Mixxy that she never asked her for help, and Mixxy responds by saying Suzie can’t even cross a road by herself and probably came to Japan so that she can be dependent on people all the time and pretend like she doesn’t know better (ouch). No one ever calls her out for the terrible things she does. However, in the middle of this conversation, Sunny shows up, which makes Mixxy madder, considering they were going to take a look at her together, but what’s worse is that Sunny ends up sucker punching Mixxy in the stomach for getting Suzie all riled up. Suzie immediately puts Sunny to sleep, and they decide to take her to a robot expert.
What Happened to Hime’s Father?
In the meantime, while preparing for her father’s funeral, Hime learns from the nurse at the hospital that he wasn’t alone in his last moments, and her cousin Jin was there with him. Hime’s father died suddenly, which means Jin definitely had something to do with it. Hime then heads to the house, where a meeting is taking place. Picture a board meeting for the Yakuza. Hime confronts Jin in front of everybody present, claiming he was in a hurry to see her father dead. When she takes her tanto out in a threatening motion, Jin acts like the bigger person, claiming she’s not in her right mind because she’s a “woman in mourning.” According to Jin, her father called him to give him his blessing. But, Hime tells him that she had a deal with her dad. Jin even pokes fun at what she did to the politician, but Hime tells him that that was research. Hime is certain that the family will rot if it goes on the same way, and she believes she’s the future of the family, saying they won’t last against the “hangure” (these are other criminal organizations, I suppose). Hime then says she’s found the “key to their future.” I’m guessing this is from dismantling Sunny. After all of this, Jin simply tells Hime that the clan’s been assembled to take a vote.
What does Suzie learn about Sunny?
According to the robot expert, Sunny seems fine despite having been attacked by the dark manual, but she has been implanted with a tracker. Sunny is tracking 3 people, one is Suzie, the other is Noriko in prison, and there’s a third at an apartment building by a train museum. So the women decide to go find out what’s in the building. In the meanwhile, Noriko “san” is threatened at the prison by one of the inmates who says she knew of a person who went to prison on purpose and then was beaten up by the other women. But before they go, they try to figure out where the tracker is on Suzie so she can get rid of it. Suzie takes all her clothes off and there’s nothing; finally, she removes her wedding ring, and that’s where the tracker is. Mixxy’s got Suzie’s phone because she’s looking at the tracker and she notices a reply from Dee. The reply isn’t kind, and Dee basically tells Suzie she can’t forgive her, and she’s sorry to hear she’s having trouble, but she can’t help. Mixxy decides to delete the message. In a lighter moment, Suzie apologizes to Mixxy for being a terrible friend. Suzie then leaves her ring in Sunny’s storage.
The old man from the sweet potato truck is still near the house and tells Hime that Suzie’s left the house, but the tracker is still inside. He then calls her a smart woman, which has me a little bit confused. Maybe Hime wants to recruit Suzie? I don’t know. At home, Hime’s lover comforts her and claims he’ll do anything for her. I don’t know what she’s going to get him to do, but it won’t be good, seeing as she’s a grieving woman and all that.
At the end of Sunny episode 7, Suzie and Mixxy look through all the apartments in the building for Masa and Zen using the tracker, but they don’t find either of them. Instead, they go to the basem*nt, where they find the old man who delivered Sunny to Suzie. He ends the episode on a massive cliffhanger by telling Suzie that they should talk. On the other hand, Sunny wakes up in the apartment and says “Suzie,” but maybe this time she remembers something.
